About Us
Since its founding in 1995, the Center for Ports and Waterways has provided valuable applied research at the local, regional and national level, benefiting both the nation and the State of Texas.

WHO WE ARE
The Center for Ports and Waterways is part of the Texas A&M Transportation Institute and serves as a focal point for maritime research across the Texas A&M University System. Established nearly three decades ago, the center conducts applied research that helps ports, waterways and maritime industries address real-world challenges related to infrastructure, logistics, policy and system performance.
Based in Washington, D.C., the center operates at the intersection of research and national decision-making. This location allows the center to connect technical analysis with federal policy, funding programs and implementation strategies that shape the U.S. maritime system.
A Coordinated Research Approach
The center draws on expertise from across Texas A&M, including engineering, economics, public policy, environmental science and workforce development. This multidisciplinary approach enables the development of practical, cost-effective solutions that support planning, investment and operational decision-making.
The center’s role is analytical and integrative, supporting informed decision-making without advocating specific policies, technologies or funding programs. By coordinating research efforts across institutions and disciplines, the Center for Ports and Waterways helps ensure maritime research is aligned, relevant and responsive to national priorities.
